The Vegetarian Society of Tanzania was formed in January 2019 by a small group of academics, mainly from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), and activists, with a shared concern for the well-being of animals and the health and environmental impact of animal agriculture. It is the first and remains the only organization in Tanzania dedicated to promoting a vegetarian lifestyle, and continues to grow, with dozens of members across the country.
We focus on online awareness, public outreach, distribution of resources, and providing support for those who choose the vegetarian lifestyle.

“I just knew I had to do something.” Phyllis Hutchison
Four Steps to Freedom – formerly known as Friends of Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue – was founded by Phyllis Hutchison following a 2014 visit to Meserani, Tanzania, where she witnessed the shocking effect of rabies. First she saw the suffering of the dogs, brutalised and left to die in the streets following an ‘anti-rabies cull’. Then she discovered the human impact: the pain of a family torn apart by the death of their daughter after a fatal dog bite.
Since that time, we’ve been working to wipe out rabies in Tanzania, for good.
Our mission is to rescue as many wild animals as possible and provide them with the good health, freedom and happiness they truly deserve, whilst contributing to the conservation of endangered species.
We hope to inspire people to treat animals with respect and make a change, by bringing wildlife closer to their hearts. As our founder says:
